Volcanoes
Volcanoes of La Garrotxa: the most complete route (Croscat, Santa Margarida and Fageda d’en Jordà)
If you want to see the best of the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa in a single day, this combination is the most rounded: Fageda d’en Jordà + Santa Margarida volcano + Croscat volcano. It is a classic itinerary because it mixes forest, crater and volcanic geology in an accessible and very visual plane.
And the best part? Do it calmly, and then rest again in the Vall de Bianya (perfect base camp to move around the region).
Why is La Garrotxa so special?
La Garrotxa is the most emblematic volcanic territory in Catalonia: volcanic cones, lava flows and landscapes that can be explored on foot along signposted itineraries.
This route allows you to understand it without the need to be an expert: you see it and you live it.
Recommended route in 1 day (ideal order)
1) Morning: Fageda d’en Jordà (easy itinerary)
Start in the forest when the atmosphere is cooler. La Fageda is exceptional because it grows on a plain on a lava flow from Croscat and has the undulating relief of the hills.
The most comfortable itinerary is no. 2 (Sender Joan Maragall), flat and short, ideal for a walk through the heart of the beech forest.
2) Midday: Santa Margarida volcano
It is one of the most grateful craters: wide, accessible and very photogenic. In addition, the Santa Margarida area is a key point to connect with other itineraries in the Natural Park.
3) Afternoon: Croscat volcano (grederes) – itinerary 15
It closes the route with a strong visual impact: the Croscat cut (sandstones). Itinerary no. 15 is the typical option to visit it and understand the volcanic landscape through the viewpoints and the interpretive route.
Practical tips for enjoying it (without typical mistakes)
First thing in the morning, better
La Fageda and the most popular areas are best enjoyed early in the morning or during the week, especially in strong seasons.
Respect access and park rules
In La Fageda, the circulation of vehicles inside is restricted in many sections and access must be planned according to the regulations and available car parks.
Minimum equipment
- Comfortable shoes
- Water and something to snack on
- Thin jacket if it’s spring/autumn (temperature changes)
Half-day alternative (if you’re short on time)
If you just want an intense and very visual tasting, go directly to itinerary 15 of Croscat (grederes).
Return to your base camp: Camping Vall de Bianya
After a day of volcanoes, going back to sleep in the Vall de Bianya is a luxury: calm, nature and ready services.
